Centrifugal in-line fans are named because of the way the air is distributed. A turbine is mounted on the engine. During fan operation, the air spreads from the center of the motor to the sides (radially). When it meets the internal walls of the fan, the air is directed towards the outlet.

The motor mount has a specially profiled distributor that directs the flow and prevents the air from "boiling" inside the fan. Centrifugal fans usually have a greater pressure than axial fans of similar diameters and are much more effective when installed in longer air ducts. The downside of this solution is the larger dimensions of the fan.
